On February 21, 2020, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers "indefinitely postponed" a public meeting relating to the New York New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study. The six-year study, which began in 2016, aimed to identify measures to manage future flood risk in the New York-New Jersey harbor and tributaries.
In its notice announcing cancellation of the meeting, the Army Corps of Engineers indicated that the study "did not receive federal appropriation funding" in the agency's 2020 work plan, but did not explain why that was the case. Three days prior to the announcement, President Trump tweeted that one of the measures being considered in the study -- a sea wall -- "is a costly, foolish and environmentally unfriendly measure that, when needed, probably won't work anyway. It will also look terrible. Sorry, you'll just have to get your mops & buckets ready!"
