On January 31, 2025, the National Center for Science Education reported that two identical bills, Senate Bill 1 and House Bill 6, were introduced in the Ohio Senate and House. The bills were introduced by Senator Jerry Cirino (R) and Representative Tom Young (R) and would impact teaching on climate change in higher education. If enacted, the bills would require Ohio’s public universities to stay neutral on “controversial” issues, including climate change policy.
The bills are very similar to Senate Bill 83, which was introduced in 2023 and passed in the Senate but died in the House.
