NOAA Climate Change Website Suspended During Government Shutdown

During the federal government shutdown from January 20 to 22, 2018, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) temporarily suspended access to a website providing climate change data. Users attempting to access the website received a message stating: “The federal government is currently shutdown. NOAA.gov and many associated websites are unavailable while others remain live but not supported.” The government shutdown did not affect several other NOAA websites, including the National Weather Service and fisheries sites.

Update:

The climate change website returned to service on January 23, 2018, following the end of the government shutdown. A representative of NOAA informed us that suspension of the website was normal practice and that “[d]uring a government shutdown, NOAA website status is evaluated on a number of factors including whether a site supports critical life/safety functions, and cyber-security.”
