Marlies Hesselman

Marlies is Lecturer in Public International Law, Department of of Transboundary Legal Studies, University of Groningen, with key research interest in the area of human rights, climate change, environmental law and energy. Marlies teaches in the areas of (advanced) public international law, international dispute settlement, international environmental law, international climate law and human rights law, including with specific attention to international/national climate litigation, such as Urgenda v. Netherlands. She published widely on the intersections of human rights law, disaster law, climate law and energy , including specific papers on climate litigation in recent years (e.g. Research Handbook on International Environmental Law, EU Essential Climate Law with Edward Elgar). She is a co-editor of the Yearbook of International Disaster Law (Brill Publishers), and regularly supervises LLM theses on the topic of climate ligation. She is a member of the Groningen Center for Energy and Sustainability Law, and of the Global Health Law Groningen Research Center, with a thematic research focus on climate and health.
