Impact of Fossil Fuels Downplayed by DOI

In February 2017, the Department of the Interior relaunched its “American Energy” website, with several references to the adverse effects of fossil fuel use removed. For example, a paragraph warning that “our dependence on foreign oil threatens our national security, our environment and our economy” has been removed, as have several references to the need to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy to mitigate climate change. The new site emphasizes the economic benefits of fossil fuel development, stating “American energy resources create jobs and revenue. With proper policies that foster growth and local input, the Department provides opportunities for new jobs and revenue for state, local, federal, and Tribal governments.”
