The budgets of several science-focused agencies across the federal government were cut in Congress’s appropriations laws for fiscal year 2024. The cuts were enacted in two laws: the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 and the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024. The two hardest hit agencies were the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which both received 8% cuts.
In his fiscal year 2025 budget proposal, President Biden requested budget increases across scientific agencies but “in some cases they would only partially reverse the cuts Congress just made.”
