On May 19, 2020, President Trump criticized a study finding that hydroxychloroquine is not effective in treating COVID-19. The study found that patients with COVID-19 who were given hydroxychloroquine had a death rate of 27.8% compared to an 11.4% death rate for patients who were not given the drug. President Trump dismissed the findings, describing the study as "false" and claiming that it was conducted by scientists who are "obviously not friends of the adminsitration," and gave hydroxychloroquine to "very sick people. Extremely sick people. People that were ready to die."
