As a researcher, educator, and practitioner, Dr. Zia Madani specializes in innovative approaches and methodologies in international law, particularly where a cross-sectoral and multi-scalar systems approach is needed. His research focuses on the law-science-policy nexus and aims to bridge the gap between scientific advancements and formulation and implementation of science-based, evidence-informed laws and policies to address complex planetary issues and their ramifications across diverse time, space, and system scales. His research publications span disciplines —including collaborations with lawyers, natural scientists, social scientists, political scientists, and Indigenous knowledge holders. Dr. Madani currently works as an Assistant Professor of International Law at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, where he teaches courses such as international environmental law, polar law, and law of the sea. In this role, Zia is affiliated with various departments, e.g., Graduate Program of International Public Policy, and Graduate Program on International and Social Studies. He also serves as the Vice-Lead of the University of the Arctic (UArctic) Thematic Network on Science Diplomacy.
