On January 27, 2025, members of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) and the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) were informed that they had been removed from the committees. The committees, which were established in the 1970s, provided independent scientific guidance to EPA staff and leadership.
The ousted members were told that their removal was intended to “reverse the politicization of SAB and CASAC made by the [Biden] administration” and that the committee membership was being ‘reset’. According to acting EPA administrator James Payne, a request for nominations to the two committees will be announced in the coming weeks.
