Two Bills in Oklahoma Promote Teaching of Intelligent Design

Two bills were introduced in the Oklahoma House of Representatives which would, if enacted, permit teachers "to teach and discuss the theory of intelligent design." House Bill 3122 and House Bill 3543 would create a new section of state law called the “Oklahoma Freedom of Religious Expression Act,” described in the bills as “An Act relating to religious expression in schools.”

The bills, which include nearly identical language, define "intelligent design" as "a scientific theory that certain features of the universe and living things provide evidence of intelligent organization and purpose." Both bills would contravene the decision in Kitzmiller v. Dover (2005) in which a federal court ruled that teaching intelligent design as “scientifically credible” was unconstitutional.

Update: The bill died on 2/29/2024, when a deadline for bills to pass committee in their house of origin expired.
