Trump Administration Closes 25 USGS Water Science Centers

The Trump administration has ordered the closure of 25 United States Geological Service (USGS) water science centers after the “Department of Government Efficiency” terminated their leases. The data collected at these centers is used by federal agencies, state and local governments, industry, and others in monitoring water quality, issuing flood warnings, managing water supplies, and aiding in the cleanup of chemical or oil spills.

The decision to close the centers was reportedly based on expiring leases rather than scientific considerations, raising concerns among employees and experts about the potential impact on public safety and environmental management. “Nobody knows what happens if we’re not doing [monitoring for drought conditions],” said one USGS employee. While privatization of the research could be possible, companies might not be able to meet the rigorous data quality standards that the USGS maintains.

Update: In June 2025, the General Services Administration partially reversed the decision, renewing the leases on the New England Water Science Center and the South Atlantic Water Science Center.
