In or around January 2020, the Deputy Secretary of Energy Mark Menezes directed the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to stop publishing annual and quarterly renewable energy market updates, and instead publish them only every second year. Mr. Menezes justified the move as a cost saving measure, but critics say it won't reduce costs since they are mostly incurred in data collection, which will not change. Some believe the move is intended to discourage investment in renewable energy technologies. One solar investor told reporters: "the cancellation of quarterly and annual solar benchmarks will directly disadvantage solar energy's market appeal. State public service commissions and other agencies use the Energy Department's benchmarks to assess investment plans put forward by utilities . . . and less frequent reporting will delay the incorporation of solar's rapidly falling costs into these evaluations."
