Oklahoma Senate Introduces Bill that Would Threaten Climate Change Education in Public Schools

A bill has been introduced in the Oklahoma Senate that would allow the state to divert funds away from public schools that advocate “climate change ideology.” The bill describes such ideology as “including, but not limited to, disparaging the oil and natural gas industry or the agriculture industry,” but offers no further explanation. Senate Bill 943 was introduced by Shane Jett (R-District 17).

Critics worry that the bill would cause public schools in smaller districts to cut down or altogether eliminate climate change education for fear of losing state aid.

Update: The bill died in committee on 3/2/2023, when the deadline for Senate bills to be reported from committee passed.
