Nearly All Staff Overseeing Climate.gov Terminated

On May 31, 2025, nearly all of the staff responsible for creating and maintaining the US government’s climate science education website, Climate.gov, were fired. The firings included all content production staff, and it is expected that no new content will be published.

The website serves to provide scientifically accurate, politically neutral information on climate science to the public. It was run by a contract staff of about 10 individuals with contributions from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists, all but two of whom were terminated.

The firings also mean there is no staff to update the Climate.gov social media accounts, including ongoing work pushing back on climate dis- and misinformation. According to one former contractor, “[w]e were an extremely well-trusted source for climate information, misinformation, and disinformation because we actually, legitimately would answer misinformation questions. We’d answer reader emails and try to combat disinformation on social media.”

Update: A team of writers, researchers, and web developers is working to preserve climate.gov, the entire site of the fifth National Climate Assessment, and other crucial climate data that the Trump administration has removed from federal websites. This information and reports will be hosted at climate.us and will focus on information that can be understood by the general public.
