Hospital Capacity Data Withheld by Texas Health Department

On July 2, 2020, the Texas Tribune reported that the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) had refused to publish information on the number of regular and intensive care unit beds available in each of the state's hospitals. While DSHS does publish aggregated figures for all hospitals in the state, critics say that more granular data is needed to assess whether individual hospitals have sufficient capacity to deal with increasing COVID-19 cases. A spokesperson for DSHS, Chris Van Deusen, told reporters that data for individual hospitals is not made public "because hospitals within trauma service areas coordinate to ensure their communities have necessary care, and because people often cross county lines to get hospital care."

Update:

In the week of December 7, 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) began releasing weekly nationwide data on COVID-19 hospitalizations at the facility-level. These data include information on hospitalizations, intensive care unit capacity, and hospital bed capacity. With the release of this data from the HHS, groups looking to better understand how localities are impacted by COVID-19 can do so regardless of state-level restrictions.
