Florida Medical Examiners Commission Directed to Stop Reporting COVID-19 Deaths

On or around April 20, 2020, officials in Florida directed the Medical Examiners Commission (MEC) to stop publishing information about COVID-19 deaths in the state. The MEC had previously published a list of COVID-19 deaths, which included demographic information about each person who had died, indicated their probable cause of death, and provided brief case summaries with their medial and travel history. The MEC was reportedly directed to stop publishing the list after media reports showed that the death count recorded by the MEC was 10 percent higher than the official figure published by the Florida Department of Health. State officials indicated that the MEC list needed to be reviewed and possibly redacted.

Update:

On May 6, 2020, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement published a list of COVID-19 deaths based on data compiled by the state's medical examiners. Key data, including the case summaries, were redacted from the list.
