EPA Scientific Integrity Officer Acknowledged Delay of Internal Scientific Integrity Reports

During a virtual hearing on June 15, 2021, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scientific integrity officer Francesca Grifo fielded questions regarding the agency’s pending review of its scientific integrity policy and past violations of said policy. The EPA review was prompted by a January 27, 2021, Presidential memorandum aiming to strengthen scientific integrity across federal agencies, with one of the first steps being a review of current shortcomings of individual agency policies. Grifo answered questions about the state of the current review, noting that the 2021 report is “an enormous task” and should be completed around Thanksgiving of 2021. Grifo also noted that the EPA has yet to release scientific integrity reports from 2019 or 2020, without providing explanation for their delay. Grifo said the 2019 report should be published by late July 2021, and the 2020 report should be published by mid-fall 2021.
