On February 4, 2025, the New York Times reported that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is “demoting career employees who oversee scientific research, the enforcement of pollution laws, hazardous waste cleanup, and the agency’s human resources department.” The Trump administration is expected to replace these long-time nonpartisan expert positions with political appointees, although none have yet been named.
