On June 26, 2025, the journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) announced that it would cease accepting new manuscripts following the loss of key federal contracts. EHP was the only journal supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that published original research, and one of only a few scholarly publications supported by the federal government.
EHP provided a platform for publicizing research on the connection between environmental exposures and human health. The pause on new submissions comes amid growing widespread concerns about environmental pollutants and their health impacts, and could diminish visibility for important research, especially from scientists in low- and middle-income countries.
For over five decades, EHP had been supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of NIH. The journal published peer-reviewed research from NIEHS scientists, scientists from outside of the federal government, and research groups worldwide.
