DOE Proposes Rescinding Energy Conservation Standards for Conventional Ovens

DOE proposed to rescind the regulatory design requirements for conventional ovens manufactured on or after January 1, 1990. It tentatively determined that the amended design requirements “are not economically justifiable.” The National Appliance Energy Conservation Act of 1987 (NAECA), Public Law 100-12, amended EPCA to establish prescriptive standards and design requirements for gas cooking products, requiring gas ranges and ovens with an electrical supply cord that are manufactured on or after January 1, 1990, not to be equipped with a constant burning pilot light. DOE has now recommended rescinding the regulatory design requirements for conventional ovens manufactured on or after January 1, 1990, and seeks comment on all aspects of that proposal.
