On April 17, 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation, entitled "Unleashing American Commercial Fishing in the Pacific," to undue environmental protections in the Pacific Ocean. Specifically, the proclamation revokes the protections created by Proclamation 8336 (January 6, 2009) and Proclamation 9173 (September 25, 2014, which created and expanded the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM). The purpose of designating the PRIMNM was to protect and preserve wildlife and the general biodiversity and ecoystem within it.
One of the PRIMNM's protections includes a prohibition on commercial fishing within the area. President Trump's proclamation removes that prohibition to allow commercial fishing to resume within the PRIMNM.
