On February 11, 2026, President Trump signed Executive Order 14387, "Strengthening United States National Defense With America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Power Generation Fleet." 91 Fed. Reg. 7393 (Feb. 17, 2026).
The EO directs the Secretary of War, in coordination with the Secretary of Energy, to obtain power purchase agreements with American coal plants to service Department of War facilities and installations. The EO included a statement of policy that "coal is essential to our national and economic security" in line with the earlier issued Executive Order 14156 ("Declaring a National Energy Emergency"). The White House also held a "Champion of Coal" celebratory event on February 12, 2026 announcing the EO.
