Patent and Trademark Office Suspends Climate Change Mitigation Pilot Program

Effective January 28, 2025, the Department of Commerce’s Patent and Trademark Office indefinitely suspended the Climate Change Mitigation Pilot Program. The Office will not grant any petitions to participate in the program that were filed after 5pm EST on January 28. The Office’s website indicated that additional information would be forthcoming.

The Climate Change Mitigation Pilot Program was launched in 2022 to accelerate review of patent applications for innovations that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. The Program had been expanded in 2023.
