NHTSA Proposes to Reduce CAFE Standards

NHTSA proposed reducing its Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, projecting a drop from a fleetwide average of 38 miles per gallon for light-duty vehicles by 2031 (under the current standards established by the Biden administration), to 34.5 mpg. NHTSA also proposed eliminating the inter-manufacturer credit trading system, and amending the light-duty vehicle fleet classification system.
