On June 1, 2021, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland issued an order suspending oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The order follows President Biden's Executive Order on Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis, which directed the Secretary to place a moratorium on drilling in order to assess the alleged deficiencies in the environmental assessment that the previous administration had conducted.
