EPA proposed to extend compliance deadlines for many zero-discharge requirements established in 2024, as part of the effluent limitations guidelines and standards for the steam electric power generating industry. EPA also proposed to extend the deadline for facilities to decide whether to submit a Notice of Planned Participation. The agency further committed “to explore other flexibilities to promote reliable and affordable power generation.” The 2024 regulations had established stringent discharge standards for four wastewaters generated at these facilities: flue gas desulfurization wastewater, bottom ash transport water, combustion residual leachate, and legacy wastewater.
