EPA Proposes to Exempt Road Refrigerant Appliances from HFC Leak Requirements

EPA announced a proposed rule exempting all road refrigerant transport appliances (such as for trucks transporting perishable goods) from hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) leak repair requirements established in the 2024 Emissions Reduction and Reclamation (ER&R) Rule. The ER&R rule sought to manage and reduce HFCs by implementing strict requirements for leak repairs and promoting the use of reclaimed HFCs in refrigeration systems. HFCs are a significant contributor to climate change, hundreds of times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term.
