On May 7, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule to strengthen the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) for coal-fired power plants under the hazardous air pollutants program of the Clean Air Act. The rule tightens the emission standards for toxic metals by 67 percent, and finalizes a 70 percent reduction in the emission standard for mercury from existing lignite-fired sources.
