DOT Proposes Allowing LNG by Rail

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed permitting liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be transported by rail.  The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) within DOT, in coordination with the Federal Railroad Administration, issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to amend the Hazardous Materials Regulations to allow for the bulk transport of LNG in rail tank cars. The Notice was issued in response to a petition by the Association of American Railroads, and states that the proposal would facilitate the transportation of natural gas to markets where pipeline transportation is limited or unavailable.

Comments on the proposal will be accepted through December 23, 2019.
