On July 28, 2025 the Department of the Interior announced the rescission of three policy documents which imposed certain restrictions on oil and gas drilling in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. The documents include:
- Request for Information: "Special Areas Within the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska," 89 Fed. Reg. 58,181 (July 17, 2024) (for official rescission, see 90 Fed. Reg. 35,916 (July 30, 2025))
- Report: "Maximizing Protection in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska" (Jan. 2025)
- BLM Memorandum: "BLM Interim Management of Special Areas within the National Petroleum Reserve – Alaska” (Jan. 16, 2025)
Interior takes this action pursuant to President Trump's "energy dominance" agenda.
