DOI Proposes Rule to Streamline Permitting for Oil & Gas in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska

On September 8, 2026, the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management proposed a rule to streamline the decision-making process to authorize construction of oil and gas production sites and rights-of-way in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. The rule would establish defined criteria for repeatable activities with similar environmental effects that, when met by an applicant, would result in a streamlined permitting process for qualifying production sites. The rule would decrease regulatory burdens and increase fossil fuel production. 91 Fed. Reg. 57091 (Sep. 8, 2026).
