On June 22, 2026, the Department of the Interior announced a proposed rule to modify the Waste Prevention Rule. Among other things, the changes would reduce compliance costs by $17 million, remove requirements for waste minimization plans for applications to drill, and reducing financial penalties for methane venting and flaring. This would all incentivize further fossil fuel production and increase greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register. 91 Fed. Reg. 37906 (June 24, 2026).
