DOE issued a notice requesting public comment on a petition that seeks to delay compliance dates for energy conservation standards for commercial water heating equipment and consumer furnaces. The petition for rulemaking, submitted by the American Gas Association (AGA), the American Public Gas Association (APGA), and the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA), argues that extending the compliance deadlines for commercial water heaters (currently October 6, 2026) and consumer furnaces (currently December 18, 2028) until January 1, 2030, at a minimum, would improve energy affordability and reduce regulatory burdens. DOE is seeking public comment on whether it should grant the petition and initiate a rulemaking, which would delay associated emissions reductions.
