On August 13, 2025, Interior's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) issued a direct final rule to amend its commingling regulations to "improve efficiency and maximize recovery of America’s energy resources." According to an agency press release, the rule is to "clarify expectations for offshore commingling, ensuring production methods protect well integrity, safety and ultimate recovery."

Second Trump Administration (2025-2028)

On May 22, 2025, the Department of the Interior announced that it has designated the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) as the lead agency to oversee the decommissioning of oil and gas rigs in the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, transferring that authority from NOAA.

On April 24, 2025, Interior announced that it has adopted a new commingling policy pursuant to Executive Order 14154, which it claims will increase the output of offshore oil drilling by approximately 10%.
